A Catalogue of Works by Artists Born Before 1865 by Thayer Tolles,
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a distinguished and comprehensive collection of late nineteenth-century American sculpture, particularly strong in neoclassical and Beaux Arts works and acclaimed for its preeminent group of lifesize statues in marble and bronze. This is the first volume of a two-volume set that will record the museum's collection. The museum's holdings -- and the book -- accurately document the history of American sculpture and its development as a profession. They range from work by artists who lived in Italy and carved marble and those who studied in Paris and cast in bronze to those who worked only in the United States and were pioneers in the techniques of their art. The artworks represent high points in the careers of such renowned sculptors as Hiram Powers, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Gaston Lachaise, and Paul Manship. Included are premier examples of neoclassical ideal nudes, expressive genre statuettes, naturalistic representations of Native American subjects, studies for and reductions after monumental sculpture, dramatic depictions of animals, and many portraits in the preferred styles and materials of each period. An essay by Thayer Tolles discusses the history of the Metropolitan Museum's American sculpture collection, and there are detailed entries on all works.

Justice in Paradise by Bruce Clark,
Justice in Paradise by Bruce Clark,
As a newsmaker, Bruce Clark is infamous -- not for his discussions of the finer points of the law in relation to Aboriginal rights but for being dragged away by the police at the Native standoff at Gustafsen Lake, British Columbia. Now he is challenging the United States' ownership of Liberty Island and the rest of the Hudson River drainage basin -- the site of the world's most potent symbol of freedom, the Statue of Liberty. A jurisprudential adventure story, Justice in Paradise recounts how a commitment to Native rights and an extraordinary passion for the rule of law have determined the course of Clark's life. From a childhood in an Indian residential school, to the defence of aboriginal rights before the World Court, to being disbarred, Bruce Clark's struggle has led him to a fight against the justice system itself. Justice in Paradise explains the legal and philosophical position behind Clark's opposition to the Indian rights industry. He argues that the North American legal system causes the genocide of those indigenous peoples who embrace traditional religion and identity and accuses those who administer it of chicanery and abandoning the rule of law.
