Gray whales were hunted to extinction in the Atlantic Ocean and nearly became extinct in the Pacific Ocean. After laws were passed to protect whales in the 1970s gray whales made a rapid comeback and today number approximately the same as they did before whaling almost caused them to disappear.

Gray's Beaked Whale - Gray's Beaked Whale (Mesoplodon grayi), sometimes known as Haast's Beaked Whale or the Scamperdown Whale is one better known members of the genus Mesoplodon. The scientific name is in reference to John Edward Gray, a zoologist at the British Museum.
