Marin Art and Garden
Ocean Liner Postcards in Marine Art 1900-45 by Robert Wall, This book provides a fascinating insight not only into the art of a particular school of marine painters in the early part of the twentieth century, but also into the history of a time of great technological change. These changes were to bring about the introduction of marine art postcards, contribute to their huge popularity and then lead to their demise, all in the space of some fifty years. The official acceptance of the picture postcard by the postal services in Britain in 1902 came at the height of the North Atlantic passenger traffic. Postcards on all themes were soon being produced and the shipping companies saw in the postcard a convenient and cost effective advertising medium. Marine artists were used in preference to photographers partly due to the difficulty of effectively photographing large ships at sea and due to the need for good color. As a result, a significant school of very competent marine artists grew up around the postcard industry. These postcards provide a nostalgic look at forgotten days of leisured and luxury travel and the accompanying text records the ships, their builders, and the great names in shipping companies.
E.W. Cooke R.A., F.R.S.: The Life and Works by John Munday, One eminent Victorian for whom a biographical study is long overdue is the marine painter Edward William Cooke, R.A., F.R.S., F.S.A., F.L.S., F.Z.S., F.G.S. (1811-1880), who, as the letters after his name will indicate, had interests far beyond the coastal views and inshore shipping of Europe which were his main subjects on canvas. He emerges as a gardener and garden designer on a grand scale, a student of geology, a plantsman, botanical illustrator, humorist, antiquarian and collector. Although several exhibitions have been held covering aspects of Cooke's work, John Munday's long awaited study gathers together a more representative collection of paintings and drawings and explores the many-sided character of this fascinating man. His diary, and other documents now made available by his family, enable us to see what he was about almost every day of a working life spanning half a century, and provide a remarkable insight into the life and work of this extraordinary Victorian.
